An ikat inspired desk

September 5, 2013 By Reeves @ The Weathered Door 26 Comments

Lately I have been wanting something more design-wise. I love a simple painted piece, but sometimes they can be a little too plain. I picked up this desk from goodwill for a crazy inexpensive price with all the hardware removed and the top plus one side already sanded. I think someone else attempted this project and them backed out – good for me!
I’ve had this idea of outlining each drawer in an ikat-ish design and finally sketched it out and decided to give it a go on this desk.
I sanded, filled holes and painted the whole piece with 2 coats of General Finishes Coastal Blue milk paint. After is had cured, I painted on the ikat design in Behr’s Bayside (left over from this makeover). I was super nervous to paint it on since it was going to be all free hand, but I just went for it and it turned out better than I thought! Once dry the whole piece got sealed in clear wax and new hardware was added to finish off the look. I think it turned out great and is not just a plain piece you see all the time.

Disclosure: General Finishes sent me the milk paint to try out free of charge, all opinions are my own.
