A couple weeks ago I wanted make some coasters to protect my furniture from any water rings, but I wanted some that were were also fun and cheap! I used some wood that was an extra shelf in a cabinet I did. One side was light wood, perfect for the scrabble look, and the other side has a darker stain on it.
I drew out some 4in x 4in squares and had my dad cut them out using his circular saw. They are not perfect and even a little wonky, but I don’t care, they still serve their purpose. Before painting them I sanded the edges, tops and bottoms so they were not too sharp, pointy or rough. To add the scrabble letter and number, I just traced it from the computer screen (you could also print it out), then scribbled all over the back with a pencil, flipped it over and traced from the front to transfer the outline. Black acrylic craft paint and a small brush worked for painting the letter and number, but a sharpie also works and is easier to use on the small numbers. Two of the coasters got letters added, but on the third I added some different width stripes to using frog tape.
As cool as they were, I felt they needed something else, so I used some bright colored craft paint on the edges to add a pop of color and hide the raw wood.
Once the two coats of paint on the edges dried, I sealed each side and the edges with 3 coats of some poly I had. If I really wanted these to hold up, I would recommend exterior poly, but I just used what I had on hand.
I love that I can use either side, but my favorite is the dark wood with the bright colors.

I so want to do this for game night here! I need to find some scrap wood, though! I love the idea of adding color for a pop of "look at me!". I love the idea of adding color everywhere, though. ;D

scrabble words with 2 letters
Oh my gosh, I have to make these. I love typographic decor AND Scrabble. The colored edges are a really nice touch as well. I don't suppose you made the whole alphabet? The sad thing about these is that you couldn't make ones to represent the blank tiles without making the people who used them feel they'd just gotten a regular old coaster.
These would look great in the home decor section of Kollabora, the crafting and DIY community! I know for a fact that several other members are huge Scrabble fans.
