Midnight Mid-Century Nightstand

November 13, 2012 By Reeves @ The Weathered Door Leave a Comment

I am really mad at myself right now for not having a before picture of this little piece. I just completely forget in my excitement to paint. For the before, just imagine the nightstand with no paint, in a medium wood tone. It also had scratches, so imagine scratches.

Well, I got this little mid-century modern nightstand at goodwill. Months ago. Thats why I forgot to take a picture. For the past two months I take the picture right when I get something, but I did not do that with this mid century guy. I adore mid century furniture. It’s just cool stuff.

I have been thinking of a color to paint a campaign dresser and campaign desk I have, and wanted something other than grey. I love grey, it is a great neutral color since I sell most my pieces, but I wanted something else. In my mind, a dark grey-blue would look awesome with brass hardware. It is a color I do not usually use, but it is still pretty neutral.

I bought a blue-grey quart of paint this weekend, and the next day at the Habitat for Humanity Store (you should all find a Habitat store in your area!) I found a gallon of a dark blue-grey. I could not pass it up for $5, and I actually like it a little better than the quart I got. It is darker, kind of a midnight blue-grey. Driving home I realized that I could use it on the mid century nightstand I have had for a while. The legs have brass caps on the bottom, and it was going to make them pop! For a while I was thinking I would paint two off-centered stripes going down he drawers, but I will save that for another project. My other idea was to do ombre on the drawers of the nightstand, but I changed my mind on that as well.

I primed the whole piece because the seemed like it was going to absorb a lot of paint. I taped off the brass part on each leg, then gave it 3 coats. I was working the freezing garage, but a tiny heater helped to dry the paint. I let it cure in the house, then waxed everything the next day.

Lately I have been wanting to keep every piece. I wish I owned a house so I could decorate and furnish it. Hopefully in the next 5 years. I need to get out of college first! But I love the color on this piece. Dark blue-grey may be my new go-to color.

Cute – your little red fan is adorable. I like that you just left it plain so that those feet could pop.
I refinished a mid century sideboard in just about the same colour….with gold feet and all – I think they could be twins! http://www.aswellplacetodwell.com/2012/09/mid-century-modern-side-board-redo.html

You've done a gorgeous job with this! I have its bigger sister (brother?), a dresser with six drawers just like these. Mine has a veneer top, but its sides and drawers are plain (not veneered) wood. Yours doesn't seem to have had that, but with the (beautiful) paint, I can't quite tell, so I'm asking: Did you paint over veneer here? (If not, have you done so on other pieces, and what were your results?) Thanks! 🙂

    Thanks Dorothy!
This one did not have veneer on it, it was just some cheap-ish wood… nothing special (which is why it got painted). I have painted over veneer and it is fine. The only thing is if you sand the piece before, be careful you don't sand through the veneer because paint can soak in differently on different woods/surfaces. Primer helps with this.
