Painted Pedestal Coffee Table

This has been the week of projects! I finished another piece last night. An oak pedestal coffee table… at 1:30am after I got home from babysitting. Late night painting is my thing. It is fun and I am more productive. Win, win.

Like many of the projects I have been doing, this coffee table had been sitting in the garage for a few months. There was a gouge out of the top near an edge. That is why I avoided it. My mom had picked it up from goodwill, and she also helped fix the bad spot. It got filled with putty, sanded down, and then all the little spots that you could still see got filled with Elmer’s Wood Filler. I don’t have a real before, because I forgot… again! Instead, the “before” are some progress shots. I primed the top of the table (2 coats), but the edges only got 1 coat. This coffee table is a solid piece. It is all oak and the top spins. Yes, I did sit on it and spin around for fun. It almost tipped over.

I decided to paint the top a light, creamy grey, and the base a dark grey. I like two toned things 🙂 After I painted the base, I flipped the table over to paint the top. Not a fan of the total color separation.

I then painted the inset piece under the top (I have no clue what that is called). I still need to wax the whole thing, but after that, I am finished! You can still slightly see the spot that was fixed on top, but you have to look for and be at the right angle.

I will be taking a short break from painting. I have finals from now through the middle of next week. Oh college! Actually, that’s probably a lie. There is no way I can take a break. Hopefully I can finish something over the weekend. I am dying to finish one of the campaign pieces I have. Maybe you will see one of those soon!

It came out nice. I have a similar dining room table I just purchased for refinishing. Haven't decided whether to paint or stain just yet. Thanks for the inspiration.

It looks great, I especially like the grey on the skirt. That's what I call that piece going around the under-edge.
