Blue nightstand with a little design

March 26, 2013 By Reeves @ The Weathered Door Leave a Comment

Lately I have been wanting to do artsy things, like painting. Not just furniture painting, but the art type. I got this nightstand when I bought a dresser… the owner threw it in and I was not going to pass that up.  I tried sanding it, but whatever sealer was used on the top had dripped down all of the sides and was crazy hard to get off. I even used the electric sanders, but it was not working too well. I almost put it out to the curb last night when I decided I was not going to try and save it. Then this morning I thought I might as well try something artsy on it if I was going to toss it any way. It was worth a try.

I used milk paint on it in the color French Grey… which is really blue. I still don’t get that, but the color is lovely! I used the bonding agent to make sure it would stick and it worked really well! I only used two coats and since it is 60 degrees today it took about 10 minutes to dry. Then I used some white paint to do the little Miss Mustard Seed inspired design on the drawers. It definitely did not turn out like I imagined it, but what ever does? At least not for me 🙂 After I lightly sanding to smooth everything out and did some distressing as well, then I sealed it with orange oil. It was a pretty easy under 2 hour project. Basil was my painting buddy… but really just got in the way by running around and trying to lick me while I was painting the design.

Here it is finished. Good thing I did not put it our on the curb. I’m sure someone will love it.

I didn't care much for the original, but I LOVE the after. Your white detailing was just the touch it needed with the new color.

Love the free hand detailing. Did you measure and figure out how many sweeps to do on each side? It matches up very well on both drawers.
The color is really pretty as well.

Saw you at MMS linky party. This is a beautiful little nightstand. I too, have been inspired by MMS painted designs on furniture and have been on the lookout for a good piece to do it to. So happy I saw this. Great job!

I did not measure, but I did count. I would start in the middle, see how many it took to get to one side, then do the same on each side to they somewhat matched up. I really just went for it and like that it is not perfect. Adds character!

    Jamie,
I don't know what you specifically want to know. You can check out these two post where I went into more detail and compared waxed vs. oiled milk paint. If you want to know more about sealing with oils I believe you can read about it on the Real Milk Paint Co. and the Old Fashioned Milk Paint Co.'s websites. I may do a post later on with what I learn/know about it.
