Grey Lacquered Campaign Cabinet

March 20, 2013 By Reeves @ The Weathered Door 12 Comments

I am back with another campaign piece. I found this piece on craigslist by searching “brass corners”. Most people do not know the name or style of these pieces, so searching “campaign” does not usually get you very far. This piece was located in Kingston, which is a ferry ride from where I live, but the price was so good I thought it might be worth it. My dad and I went to pick it up. The ferry ended up costing more than the cabinet, but it was a really fun little trip. We ended up taking a different ferry back into Seattle (for the view), and then went home from there. Here are some pictures of the sun going down when we left Edmonds and the view of Seattle on the way back. It was absolutely gorgeous!

The main reason I wanted it was because it looked to be the exact match to the Lane Campaign Dresser I have. The seller had said there was not maker’s mark, but it is stamped as a Lane piece. It was in pretty great shape. There was some chipped veneer on the front piece and it needed a bit of sanding to smooth out the finish, but it was solid, sturdy and the drawers and doors worked great.

I wanted to go neutral with this piece, but I also wanted something durable. A couple months ago I got a $1 can of paint from Sherwin Williams. It was a quart in the color cityscape, which has been discontinued, so it was marked down. The good thing is it is latex, high gloss and the type of paint that hardens really well. It is meant for floors so I knew it would be durable on a piece of furniture.

I took off all of the hardware, which was easy since Lane used screws to put on the brass corner pieces and not nails. No prying here! I removed the doors and drawers, sanded everything to make sure there was a smooth sureface for the paint, then used one coat of primer (applied with a foam brush). After that it was just 3 coats of paint. I made sure to let it dry over night in between coats. Since it is a glossy paint I did not have to wax or seal it with anything. As usual I used Bar Keeper’s Friend to polish the hardware and get all of the tarnish off. It was much easier than shining the hardware from other campaign pieces I have done. I wish I would have used a darker color to make the hardware stand out, but I used what I had on hand 🙂

That looks great! Superb color choice! I just finished two, little campaign night stands. And, you are right, most people have no idea what the name type of these pieces are, so searching for descriptive words is how I do it as well. Great find and thanks for sharing!

Nicely done! I'm your newest follower. 🙂 When I saw you were from Seattle (I'm from Poulsbo) and you painted and sold furniture…I thought here's someone I will enjoy getting to know! I also had a bunny named Basil but that was a few bunny's back. 🙂
Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing what else your up too!

I have this exact cabinet and I can’t decide if I want to paint it or sell it. Mine has chips on the front and I’m wondering what you did to fix that before painting.

I think you’ve got me leaning towards painting it!
