Dressers, Great Finds and Turned Legs

June 22, 2013 By Reeves @ The Weathered Door 14 Comments

Working on a bunch of pieces right now and everything is started, but nothing is finished. Two pieces keep bleeding through. One of them even got spray primed then primed with Kilz to block the stains, and that didn’t even work. So, I am sharing my favorite dresser that I painted over 2 years ago and some new pieces that have yet to be touched.

I found this dresser at a garage sale… for $25! It was the very end of the day and no one had bought it (probably because it needed paint and was missing trim detail on the drawers). Right as we pulled up I had to have it. Wish I had a before, but it was painted a medium-dark blue with grey undertones and some of the paint was chipping of to show it had been painted white before that. This is the blue it used to be leftover on the side of the drawer.

I almost painted it a similar blue since the main colors in my room are blue, grey and white, but ended up going neutral incase I ever wanted to change colors. It is an off white, cream color, but not yellow cream.  The paint was a $2 quart of oops paint from home depot in a satin finish and I never sealed it with anything, though it did cure for almost a month before using it. It has held up well! And as for the missing trim detail, I don’t mind. Before I had painted it my mom took it to a local wood-worker to make a piece of trim to match and it was going to cost $50. She let him have the drawer to fix, but after 3 weeks, we checked back and he had done nothing, so we took the drawer back and left it as it. Most of the time I hardly notice. I just can’t get over all of the trim detail. It adds so much to the look of the dresser plus the turned legs and the hardware. It is the details that make a piece. Best piece ever. Just look at it.

Now, last weekend I picked up a low dresser the slightly reminds me of my tall dresser. Don’t know the name of this style (depression era?), but I am always drawn to it. The low dresser I got also has a lot of the detail I love. Now the question is… what color should I paint it? The venner has to come off the top and possibly one of the small drawers. Any ideas?

I also picked up this antique oak buffet today. Was not sure what type of shape it would be in, bit it turned out better than I thought. What to do? Leave it, paint it, stain it? I kind of think just accenting part with paint could highlight the details. Wish I had my own house because I would make this my TV console.
What is your favorite type of furniture or favorite part? Dressers? Turned legs? Hardware? Oh! And help me out with what color to paint the new dresser. I won’t be keeping it, so it could be any color

Would the low dresser look good in red, with the middle drawer turned into a flip down front to hold a DVD player etc? It's wonderful!

    Gorgeous pieces!!!
The ONLY thing that stops the bleeding for me is Shellac – Zinsser brand – it's expensive but it works – one coat sometimes 2 and the bleeding is sealing completely ( and the bonus is that is removes any smell that's often found in antique furniture! )

That is good to know! I will look into it. I just tried using water based poly for the dresser. I used 2 coats then painted over it and it did the job! Will definitely be trying the Shellac especially since it removes and seals in the smell. I have been looking for a product that does that. Thanks!

*whistle* your dresser is sexy! I have an oldie with turned legs as well and she is my absolute favorite piece, hands down. I am drawn to them like you and I am so jealous you found that low dresser and buffet. I recently moved to a new city and the Craigslist here compared to where I used to live is just plain boo.
