French Cane Back Chair

June 17, 2013 By Reeves @ The Weathered Door Leave a Comment

Now that college is done for the summer, I have been in project mode. I have quite a few pieces in the works, but nothing is quite finished yet. Today I am sharing a french chair I found at goodwill a year ago and just got around to doing something with. This is just a quick before and after, but I will a more detailed post on how I upholstered it and what products were used as well as a budget breakdown. *You can now find that here* This is what it looked like before (minus the arm fabric, nail head trim and with the seat cut up).

My mom and I removed the stapes and fabric and I painted it a pretty grey, and it was looking like this.
The next day after painting I waxed and buffed the chair, then my mom and I got to upholstering. This is the first type of real upholstering job we have done (not just the seats of chairs that are easy to remove and reupholster) so the results are not perfect, but I think it turned out quite well! The arms were the hardest part for us.

It kind of reminds me of a restoration hardware chair. It is a great neutral piece and a little pillow can always be added for some patter and color!

Reeves, you did a really nice job. In case you don't know, I wanted to tell you about Rachel Van Hook at a blog called Van Hook & Co. She just finished a multi-part tutorial on just what you did, a chair of similar style. She's an expert, it seems, in a lot of ways. Check it out at: http://vanhookandco.blogspot.com/2013/06/how-to-reupholster-chair-finished.html.

Thanks for that Leslie, I will be sure to check it out and compare what she did to how I upholstered my chair.

Oh how funny…I just spotted your chair on MMS and then popped over to see it. I was so surprised to see Leslie's comments! I'm not sure that I'm an expert on anything but it's nice when people share my stuff! We are into a little bit of everything. I just link my chair tutorial set to MMS and it is similar to yours. Those little arms are tricky! I think because they are so small…But I would have to say it looks fabulous for your first try. And fun to do it with your Mom too.
