A distressed elephant grey dresser with white knobs

August 25, 2013 By Reeves @ The Weathered Door 28 Comments

I picked this dresser up along with the matching smaller one at an estate sale. I love the style of them and they are solid pieces.

I began by removing the hardware and filling the holes since the original pulls were not centered and I planned on getting some new ones.  They got filled 3 times, sanding in between to make sure everything was smooth and covered. The dresser had that old, musty, been sitting in a barn smell so before I began painting, I used a coat of Zinsser Shellac. This stuff is great becasue it is clear and blocks out stains and smells – I highly recommend it! After lightly sanding again I then painted on the gorgeous grey. This is the perfect grey which now my favorite go-to! I decided to distress this one, and added new white pulls as well. It’s a lovely, classic dresser.

I think the next piece I share will be a sofa table/desk as long as I get it done. Otherwise it will be another dresser 😉

The paint is Behr and the color is Elephant Skin. It really is a great warm grey – not too stark!

    Hi!
I absolutely love this dresser. Is it for sale? Are you going to do the matching smaller dresser in the same color?

    Thanks!

Your dresser turned out wonderful! It's so hard to find the right shade of gray and it looks like this is a great one! Love the white knob you used.

Yes – great stuff especially if you want to stop bleed through and also want to distress without white primer coming through. Or just to block out smells 🙂

I rarely prime pieces. If I use white I prime or if there is bleed through, but shellac also works to prevent bleed through. Lots of paints come with paint and primer in one and once a piece is well prepped (sanded and cleaned) the paint adheres very well.

About the shellac, it is shiny so after I used it I let it dry and then sanded it to rough it up and give the paint something to stick to. I did not sand through the shellac (that would be pointless and counter productive), just rough the surface up a bit. Hope that helps!
