A driftwood buffet with white knobs

November 8, 2013 By Reeves @ The Weathered Door 24 Comments

I love antique buffets, and this one is my favorite! I like the size and proportions, and with her new paint job, she is looking mighty fine!

I picked her up off of craigslist with my dad, and after negotiating a lower price, we went to pick her up and I got another $20 off (for no reason other than I asked), so we hit the bakery with the extra cash 😉 She still looked gorgeous before and some people were and are a bit angry I painted her, but it’s always hard to tell from the pictures the real condition of a piece. I really don’t mind though, I love the way she turned out!

She got two coats of milk paint in a custom color I mixed up. I lightly sanded the flat areas to help the paint stick, but most of the piece has that old, crackled, alligator finish, so I did not take time to sand it off since it adds a bit of character. I did add the bonding agent to the first coat of paint to help it adhere though. Once it was dried, the whole piece got sanded with 220 grit sandpaper to smooth it out, distressed, and then sealed it with clear wax. The last thing to do was add hardware, so once again I used the white rose pulls from the green dresser to take pictures. I don’t know what I will end up putting on when I sell her, but for now, I am enjoying the pairing of the rich, taupe paint color and the crisp white knobs.

Thank you! I really love the color too! It's a great neutral, but it is rich and makes a statement on the piece.

Really nice! I have to admit I liked the wood and would have tried to clean that up first, but I am one who paints furniture if there's a hint of ugly. (Know the commerical, "The chair doesn't like ugly?") This turned out beautifully. I hope you kept your gray recipe, because it's got a lot of depth.
    Great job.

I'm keeping it to myself, sorry! I do have to say part of the reason it has a certain look to it, is because I used milk paint so there is some variation in the color, which I love! It gives it such a unique look.

Thanks! Other than saying I used milk paint, I am not sharing specifics, but I'm sure you could get a really similar color.
